Vitamin D Testing and Injections

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin critical in absorbing calcium and phosphate from the intestines.

Vitamin D

Often known as the “sunshine vitamin”, vitamin D is produced by your body when the sun’s UV rays contact your skin. It does not occur naturally in many foods, but can be found in fish, eggs and fortified dairy and cereal products, or by taking vitamin supplementation.

Vitamin D by Injection

  • Pure Wellness Group uses Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol).
  • Vitamin D is normally injected into the shoulder or gluteal muscle.

Who may benefit from Vitamin D injections?

Vitamin D injections may be an option for people with poor intestinal absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, or those with low nutritional intake of vitamin D and who have low laboratory-tested serum levels of Vitamin D.

Injections may be helpful for people with low Vitamin D levels who are finding it difficult to attain normal Vitamin D levels with oral supplementation.

How does Vitamin D Injection & Testing work?

  1. The clinic’s reception desk, with shelves of supplements behind it

    Step 1

    Book Your Appointment

Existing patients will contact the clinic to book a short, 15-minute visit with their ND to find out if Vitamin D injections are appropriate.

A new patient only interested in a Vitamin D injection is asked to have a short initial consultation with one of our ND’s for at least 30 minutes to assess clinical needs and to determine if Vitamin D injections are appropriate and safe for the patient.

If the ND determines it is safe and appropriate, and they have the lab results to make this determination, then you may get your first shot in this visit. A Lab test is required before the ND will provide you with an injection. A Life Lab 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D test result (completed within the last 3 months is required). The test result can be from your family doctor. Otherwise our ND’s can requisition this for you.

  2. A gloved laboratory technician holding a tube of blood beside a microscope

    Step 2

    Bloodwork at Life Labs

Patients are given a lab requisition for bloodwork after their Vitamin D consultation. We recommend booking an appointment online for bloodwork at Life Labs. www.lifelabs.ca.

After the lab test results have been received, the clinic will contact you for a follow up consultation and book your first injection.

  3. A practitioner across a desk handing a sheet of paper to a patient

    Step 3

    15 Minute Follow Up Consultation

The ND will review the Vitamin D Lab results and recommend a treatment plan including dosage and injection frequency based on the lab results. If Vitamin D is appropriate and safe the first injection can be given after the follow up consult.

  4. A gloved hand holding a filled syringe, with vials in the background

    Step 4

    Vitamin D Injection

It will a take approximately 5 minutes to complete the injection visit.

Injections are typically given in a series of doses recommended by the ND. The initial injection is usually followed by a second injection in 2 weeks time. An appointment is required.

  5. Gloved hands holding a tube of blood beside a syringe

    Step 5

    Repeat Vitamin D Bloodwork

Repeat Vitamin D testing is recommended to ensure you are not receiving too much vitamin D and the body is absorbing the Vitamin D. Vitamin D can be harmful at high levels.

Vitamin D testing is usually repeated after 5 doses or every 3 months, as determined individually with your ND.
