Dr. Tara O’Brien

Even as a child, I knew that one day I would be a health care professional. The idea of helping others feel better just seemed like the right thing to do.

H.B.Sc., ND Naturopathic Doctor

My Journey to Naturopathic Medicine

Athletics pointed me in the direction of sports medicine or physiotherapy but during my third year of kinesiology studies at Laurentian University, I spent time with the first of many important medical mentors. This Sudbury-based Naturopathic Doctor opened my eyes to the full extent of what naturopathic medicine offers in terms of improving health, wellness, and quality of life. That’s when I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

Dr. Tara O’Brien

After completing my Honours Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, I moved to Toronto for the four-year naturopathic medicine program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM).

Upon graduation, I was selected to do a two-year clinical residency at CCNM. It was a tremendous opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience in the applications and importance of intravenous (IV) therapy. I also spent a lot of working time at free community clinics and women’s health programs providing holistic health and functional medicine therapies and treatments.

Once my clinical residency was completed, I moved back to Sudbury. That was in 2011. Pure Wellness Group has been my home ever since.

Service Above Self

I was born and raised in the west end of Sudbury. I’m proud of my roots here and extremely proud of the family that raised me and instilled the values of servitude and service. By 10 years of age, I was learning about volunteering, sharing my time, and sharing the gifts I had been given.

As an adult, my experiences at events like the Relay for Life have reinforced my belief that many people walk difficult journeys and that the courage they demonstrate is worthy of our unconditional support.

I feel a strong sense of service and empathy, whether it is through my volunteer work or in my interactions with my patients. In my practice, I see people suffering with chronic illnesses and facing challenging health conditions, and I feel immensely privileged to have the knowledge and ability to do everything I can to ease the suffering of others.

My Naturopathic Practice

My years as a Naturopathic Doctor, and the thousands of patients I have worked with, have reinforced the fact that the more we learn about the human body, the more we recognize how much we can and still need to learn. In my practice, as in life, I am committed to learning and growing.

I am continuously studying new ways to view symptoms, familiarizing myself with new clinical techniques, and staying up to date with research. Functional medicine is a field that is always evolving.

I believe that, in order to stay current, I must continue to evolve.

In my professional and personal life, I surround myself with colleagues who are impacting others in a positive way, and influential women who genuinely care about people. I am fully committed to my own personal growth and strive for increased self-awareness. I accept responsibility for my health and encourage my patients to do the same.

My naturopathic practice is based on my commitment to educate and empower my patients, while working together as a team to improve their health and maximize their quality of life.
